Josh Thompson, Ashley Ray, and Six Miles South know how to throw the perfect field party

Josh Thompson - by Jessica Blankenship
On Friday night, the small town of Owenton, Kentucky, showed how to throw a perfect field party filled with music and memories. Froggy 104.9 FM out of Frankfort held their second annual Froggy Field Party at the Owen County Fairgrounds. It was in conjunction with the Owen County Fair. Joining the Field Party were the likes of Six Miles South, Ashley Ray, and Josh Thompson.

Even with the fear of rain, there was not a drop that fell for the entire evening. Pickup trucks lined the hill above the horse show arena where the stage was set. People would line up their chairs throughout the horse show arena and up the hill. Families brought their children and friends. Overall, it was a relaxing atmosphere full of camaraderie and fun times. Old friends saw each other and new friendships were also made.

First up on stage was Six Miles South of Henry County, KY. Fans of the band were in full force support, wearing shirts with the band's name and logo. Right off the bat, the band got the party started with "Turn it Up." They continued to sing several of their well-written songs before concluding with Baby's Gone. They fed from the energy from the crowd. Collectively the band put on a great performance from vocals to instrumentation. Six Miles South would be one to see again live. In speaking with Jamie Tingle after their set, he said that they are pushing to try to have their cd out within the next month. Check out my interview with Jamie here and check out Six Miles South on Facebook.

As the sun was shining over the horizon, the sounds of a truck came over. Around the corner a yellow pulling truck came towards the stage as the music on stage started. Inside was Texas hit-maker, Ashley Ray, riding in the passenger seat of the truck with the ever-fitting phrase "Ain't Dirt Cheap" across the front window. Ashley Ray took to the stage that was met with the fans screaming and clapping along. Her hour long set included personal well written songs as well as a few covers. Fans knew word for word for "Dirt Cheap," her song that has really done well on the Frankfort radio station. Ashley would also sing "Hurricanes," a song about a lover leaving her damage to her heart like a hurricane makes damage to the land. With "Red Wine with the Blues," Ashley would cover a subject that most record labels are afraid to release - a song about a woman letting herself free. The song has proven to be a hit with radio listeners in Kentucky and hopefully the record label will start listening themselves. Ashley Ray would meet with fans after the show. After speaking to several fans in the audience, they agreed that she is one to watch and they were very surprised with her stage presence. The sassy singer-songwriter really brought her A-game and we hope that she does come back to Kentucky soon.

As the sun was setting over the hills of Kentucky, fans gathered around the stage and all over the hill to prepare for Josh Thompson. Over the speakers, the tunes and Waylon Jennings began to pour out as another pulling truck, in blue, pulled up to the stage. Josh Thompson came out waving with his hand in the air before grabbing his guitar to take to the stage. He went into "Blame It On Waylon," one of his top honkytonking songs to blend it in with Waylon Jennings, "Lonesome, Onry and Mean" before bringing it back to his song. Right off the bat, the fans in the audience knew they were in for a good time. Thompson would entertain the crowd with selections from his current cd, "Way Out Here," as well as new songs and cover songs of Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, and Johnny Cash. The amazing part was that fans knew his songs, including the unreleased songs ("I Won't Go Crazy," note for note singing right along. Josh Thompson's set list also included acoustic versions of "I Like to Believe In That" and "Sinner," which he would bring back the band towards the end. He would cover David Allen Coe's "The Ride," Waylon's "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way," and Charlie Daniels "Long Haired Country Boy." After his two hour set, fans hollered for more and were excited as he and his band made their way back on stage. His encore included the Merle Haggard hit, "Footlights," as well as Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues" with a mix of "Jackson".

Overall, the Froggy Field Party II was a complete success and was an entertaining experience for the entire family. Fans in the audience probably would not have had such an intimate experience with these artists as they did last night. All three acts took time to meet and greet with the fans to have a little one on one time. Josh Thompson will be going back on the H2O Tour with Brad Paisley very soon, so shows like this will be few and far between. It is even more impressive that a local radio station such as Froggy 104.9 showed the big dogs how to have an excellent field party concert that will be the talk of Kentucky for quite sometime. Their risk of having a show of newcomers, along with allowing fans to stand/sit wherever they want, bring a cooler, camera, even some fried chicken for dinner, proved to be a win-win for everyone from the performers to the fans.

A Conversation with Singer-Songwriter Ashley Ray

Ashley Ray
Ashley Ray was featured as one of our top Females in Country Music to Watch in 2010. Blending the twang with the sweet soulful vocals, Ashley Ray has made quite a following. Her latest single, "Dirt Cheap," is available on  I-tunes and has been released to radio stations. She recently released a 5 song EP available in stores.  The Kansas native is now making a scene down in Texas, following the leagues of the honky-tonk heroes, and taking lead in a scene mainly dominated by males.

I recently spoke to Ashley about her musical career and what fans can expect when they see her with Josh Thompson at the Frankfort Froggy 104.9 Field Party on July 9th.  More Details on that concert can be found here.  Be sure to check out my interview with Josh Thompson as well.

Last year while going on tour with Eric Church & Jonathan Singleton and the Grove, you did a little bit of "couch surfing." How did that idea come about? Any memorable experiences out of it?
I'm all about trying new things and living on the edge, as long a it doesn't involve sky diving or craziness like that. I draw the line there. Couch surfing seemed like something not many country artists have done before. We're on the road a lot and crash on friends couches/floors, but thought it would be cool and kinda crazy to stay with the fans! Doing that made some life long friendships!

Fast forward to now, your single, "Dirt Cheap," has been gaining airplay on radio. What has been going inside your head seeing how things are flowing with the single and your career?
It's a lot of work to work a single but so much fun seeing it make some tracks! We released it down in Texas, Oklahoma, and parts of Arkansas and New Mexico. It hasn't been released nationally yet, but I can only imagine how much more busier things will be when we do that. Either way I'm so thankful that I'm getting to live out this crazy dream!

With the Country Throwdown Tour coming soon, what can fans expect with your segment on the Bluebird Cafe stage? (Fans can check the tour out in Cincinnati on May 21st)
Fans can expect to be really one on one with us songwriters. It's gonna be an intimate setting, and for me that's the coolest thing ever! As a music fan and songwriter myself, if and when I get up close and able to talk to my favorite songwriters, to me that's the most special part. That's where music begins, so fans will get to see where it all starts.

How come did you decide to try your hand in the Red Dirt scene in Texas rather than stay in Nashville?
I thought why not; I've been in Nashville for 8 years. I have had a finished record for 2 years now. I just wanted to get something out for the fans. Nashville works a little slow sometimes, and I just want my music heard. I have toured in Texas before and have made a lot of life long friends, I'm so grateful for their support!! Guys like The Randy Rogers Band, Wade Bowen, and Eli Young Band. I jumped at the chance to get out there and play some shows with my buddies!

What do you think separates you from other new artists in country music?
I really take the title "artist" seriously!! I have started from the ground up, going from bar to bar, person to person, and sharing my music. Whether it be a crowd of 50 or 500, I believe in what I'm singing every night.

You are personally active on Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, etc. Do you feel that this is essential to a new artist's career and has it helped with your relationships with fans?

Absolutely! It's so important to have a relationship with your fans. They are your backbone! No artist can make it without their fans. They are the reason why we get to continue to make music. I'm in touch with them because I wanna know what they like, what they don't, I want their opinions, they matter the most!

You recently released your self-titled EP Album on May 4th. Will this be available in stores or online only? What songs can listeners look forward to hearing?
It'll be available at amazon.com, itunes, and select Wal-Marts and Best Buy where music is sold. Its a 5 song EP which includes my current single "Dirt Cheap!" There's some pretty rocking stuff on there, the rest I'm gonna leave as as a surprise, go get it!

If you could co-write a song with anyone, who would it be?
Buddy Miller, Bob Seger or The Dixie Chicks, sorry couldnt pick just one!

While growing up on a farm, I realized that there are always life lessons learned that sometimes you don't realize at the time. What is one thing you learned while being raised on the farm?
HARD WORK and GRACE. Growing up on a farm you have more responsibilities, there was always something to work on, to be fed, or to be fixed. The grace part just comes naturally, the land and country teaches you to be thankful for the beauty the good Lord created for us! Wish I could go back there right now!

I can say that Kentucky is delighted to have you and Josh Thompson to perform at the Froggy Field Party in July. Do you have anything to say to those that plan on attending the show?

Wear your party panties, it's gonna be a BLAST! I'm gonna hang and watch Josh's show, would love to meet each and every one of you!

Women in Country Music to Look Out For in 2010

Nothing can stop you in your tracks like hearing the wail of a southern soulful voice singing the sorrows of heartache. Even more so, hearing the emotions of love gained, love lost, family, friendships, and more through the voice of a woman can pull at the heartstrings. Several women in country music have started to gain momentum and are my top picks for those to look out for in 2010.

Ashton Shepherd
Ashton Shepherd walked right into the business with the Loretta Lynn sounding tune, "Takin' Off This Pain," singing that she's got a cold beer in her right hand and the left has got her wedding band. Then she turned around with the title track of her debut album, "Sounds So Good." The album was highly appraised by critics and fans, but "country" radio for the most part turned their backs to something that is truly country. She is currently working on a new album, but be sure to pick up her debut release. This Alabama native is as southern as molasses with her vocals that wail through tunes that could have been written back in time, or even current.

Check Out Ashton Shepherd's:

Sunny Sweeney
Having been raised in Texas, Sunny Sweeney has gained popularity over the years both there and in Nashville. She is right at home in a crowded honky-tonk singing songs of the forefathers while bringing alongside her tunes that fit perfectly alongside the classics. She is a modern Loretta Lynn meets Merle Haggard. Her debut record, "Heartbreaker's Hall of Fame," opened the door to showcase her Texas flavored tunes to a new audience. Not only does she have a brassy vocal ability, she's full of sass and humor. Be sure to check out her myspace for new unreleased tunes.

Ashley Ray
Kentucky country music fans got a taste of Ashley Ray's music when she opened up for Eric Church at the UK Singletary Center in 2009. While on the tour, she "couch surfed" by visiting the homes of fans from town to town. Her adventures brought her closer to the fans and provided the best tourist approach to each town. Blending the twang with the sweet soulful vocals, she has made quite a following. Her latest single, Dirt Cheap, is available on Itunes and has been released to radio stations. The Kansas native is now making a scene down in Texas, following the leagues of the honkytonk heroes.
