It was all about the music at sixth-annual Unbridled Eve Derby Gala

Celebrities from film, television, music, comedy and sports, horse racing industry professionals, and local and national business leaders, gathered last night for the always highly anticipated sixth Annual Unbridled Eve Gala, an Official Kentucky Derby Event.

American country artist, Grammy-Award nominee, and former contestant on The Voice, Billy Gilman kicked off the musical performances for the evening followed by all-female country group Farewell Angelina, which features four powerhouse vocalists, dynamic songwriters and multi-instrumentalists.

Next to take the stage was former “Kansas” lead singer, John Elefante who sang classic hits such as Point of “No Return,” “Dust in the Wind,” “Cold as Ice,” and “Wayward Son.” Wally Palmar, lead singer of The Romantics followed Elefante’s lead kicking off his set with “Talking in Your Sleep,” “Rock You Up,” and “What I Like About You.” 

Guests packed the dance floor as three-time Billboard Award winner, Taio Cruz performed his hits, “Dynamite” and “Break Your Heart” followed by a set of throwbacks from headliner Morris Day & The Time including the hit “Jungle Love.”

To close the night, Unbridled Eve regulars Robin Meade, Bob Guiney, JD Shelburne, John Elefante, Wally Palmar, and Farewell Angelina took the stage for an all-star jam.

What is happening at Renfro Valley?

For 78 years, Renfro Valley Entertainment Center has provided musical entertainment.  From country to gospel to bluegrass music, as well as comedy, so many acts have graced the stage at both the Old Barn and New Barn.  Many of those have went on to become award winning, internationally known superstars.  One of those acts were The Coon Creek Girls.  On the other side, many acts were perennial favorites in the new barn, including The Oak Ridge Boys.  The original Renfro Valley Barn Dance started in 1939 and was carried by WHAS-AM out of Louisville and WCKY-AM in Cincinnati.  It is no longer on the radio, but fans can enjoy it live in person every Saturday night.  

Kentucky State Fair announces 2017 concert lineup

The sounds of summer return to Freedom Hall in August for the star-studded Kentucky State Fair Main Stage concert series. Three nights of music, ranging from country to hip-hop, offers something for everyone at the annual summer festival.

“The Main Stage concert series starts off with fun music from the 90s, and closes with a unique country rock tour right on the dirt in Freedom Hall,” said Jason Rittenberry, President & CEO of Kentucky Venues.  “With the tradition of Alabama and newcomer Tucker Beathard in between, we believe this is one of our strongest lineups for the Fair.”

Thursday Night Live concert series announces lineup

Each summer, the city of London, Kentucky, hosts their annual Thursday Night Live Series.  It helps promote local and regional acts, as well as invite some national acts to the area.  The London Sentinel-Echo made the official announcement of the 2017 Thursday Night Live acts.  All concerts are held on Main Street in front of the Laurel County Courthouse each Thursday evening at 7:00 PM.  Available nearby parking is at the Garage on 5th Street and Broad Street, as well as on street parking spaces.  All of the shows are free of charge and open to the public.

Central Kentucky residents have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to personally meet country music icon and “The Gambler,” Kenny Rogers, when he makes his last stop in Danville at the Norton Center For The Arts on April 8 as part of his final world tour, The Gambler’s Last Deal Tour. In an online silent auction to benefit CASA of the Bluegrass, two exclusive VIP meet-and-greet tickets to meet Rogers backstage before his concert, along with two premium-seating concert tickets, will be up for the highest bidder’s grabs for ten days on eBay.com from January 15 to January 25, 2017.

Donations are tax-deductible, and all proceeds will benefit CASA of the Bluegrass, which serves to advance the best interests of abused and neglected children in the Anderson, Boyle, Franklin, and Mercer County Family Court Systems through the training and support of community volunteers who serve as Court Appointed Special Advocates working with children, the family, and the court. Currently, there is an increased demand for CASA volunteers and training.

“CASA volunteers are flies on the wall during some of the most horrific events in a child’s life, and some of the most wonderful,” said Laura Guerrant, executive director for CASA of the Bluegrass. “It can be emotional at times; it can be draining at times. But the end result of knowing that you helped ensure the child’s safety and permanency… that is exciting. That is the ultimate goal. Josh Thompson reveals what drives his music career and love of hunting

Country music singer Josh Thompson is set to headline Friday night at the World Chicken Festival

Beyond the bright lights from the amusement rides, and the smell of fried chicken from the World's Largest Skillet, Friday night at the World Chicken Festival will bring in the likes of Josh Thompson and Ray Scott.  If there is one thing that is for certain, country music fans will be in for a treat.

Six years ago, Josh Thompson arrived on the scene with his single, "Beer on the Table."  It would be followed up with "Way Out Here," which has been loved by many that are fans of John Wayne, Johnny Cash, and John Deere, as the song would go.  Thompson has kept a busy touring schedule over the years, but manages to balance his music career and personal life.

"It's a different state of mind.  You travel a lot and get to see America.  I'm a homebody, but I also love being out on the road.  It has been two different ways of life for me," Thompson recalls on balancing two aspects of his life.

Josh Thompson is no stranger to Kentucky when it comes to performances.  Six years ago, he headlined the WFKY Froggy Field Party.  (Check out review here.)  "Now that was a great time," Josh recalled.  "The fans and the folks at the radio station welcomed me with open arms.  I still remembered it."

Just when his career was taking off years ago, he went through several record label changes due to restructuring within each company.  He credits the fans for keeping him motivated.  According to Josh, "the fans are what motivate me.  When you release new music, and they love it, it keeps me going.  They (the fans) are what drive me to continue pushing forward."

Whenever an artist is faced with label changes, sometimes they lose the rights of the recordings they performed under the label.  Thankfully for Josh Thompson, he was able to use the original recordings for "Change: The Lost Record."  Josh indicated that he was able to use the originals to remix and remaster each song.  In essence, he released volume 1 in 2015 and Volume 2 is scheduled to be released in the next couple of months.

Josh Thompson is an avid outdoorsman, being a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and a partner with NRA Country.  He recently completed his third elk hunt; however he said that he "would love to be able to hunt elk in Kentucky.  Everyone is keeping an eye on the popularity that it has become there.  I recently went deer hunting a couple of weeks ago and was able to get a fully dressed deer."  He was excited to hear about the new Appalachian Wildlife Center that is being built in Bell County, Kentucky.

Farm Aid 2016 showcases powerful community partnerships that support good food from family farms

Recognizing that severe economic conditions threaten commodity farmers across the country, Farm Aid 2016, which took place today at Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, emphasized how collaboration and innovative problem-solving can strengthen food systems and family farmer livelihoods.

The annual music and food festival celebrating family farmers brought 20,000 fans together just outside the nation’s capital to celebrate ground-breaking, cooperative approaches to overcoming barriers to a family farm system of agriculture. At the same time, as dairy farmers and other commodity producers struggle with the consequences of record low prices, Farm Aid says family farmers need a broad coalition of partners to stand with them and collaborate to surmount the many obstacles that are forcing them off the land.

“The first Farm Aid sparked a 31-year effort to put power back into the hands of family farmers and all of us who eat,” said Willie Nelson, president and founder of Farm Aid. “We’ve made a lot of progress, but it’s clear we aren’t done yet. Family farmers still aren’t getting a fair shake. We need to keep coming together to help each other and find solutions.”

Farm Aid’s day-long festival kicked off with local Virginia and Washington, D.C., farmers joining Farm Aid board members Nelson, John Mellencamp, Neil Young and Dave Matthews in a conversation from the Farm Aid stage about community partnerships that are changing the food landscape. The partnerships go beyond farmers’ markets and local restaurants, crossing sectors, towns and generations. Speakers discussed collaborations that include growing new food economies in Appalachia with food hubs; addressing diet-related diseases with good food solutions like Fresh Farmacy; and revitalizing disadvantaged urban neighborhoods through community gardens. First Lady of Virginia Dorothy McAuliffe and Deb Eschmeyer, the White House’s executive director of Let’s Move!, joined everyone on stage to talk about the power of each of us to grow a strong, healthy farm and food system.

“We see invigorated local economies and stronger communities when family farmers thrive,” said Farm Aid executive director Carolyn Mugar. “Together, farmers and eaters have the power to bring equity and fairness to our farm and food system, to protect our soil and water, and to make sure that everyone has access to fresh, healthy foods.”

Farm Aid 2016 featured performances by Nelson, Mellencamp, Young and Matthews — who performed with Tim Reynolds — as well as Alabama Shakes, Sturgill Simpson, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Jamey Johnson with special guest appearance by Alison Krauss, Margo Price, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, Insects vs Robots, Ian Mellencamp and Star Swain.

Concertgoers found inspiration in Farm Aid’s HOMEGROWN Village, which featured hands-on activities that gave them a chance to dig in and learn about the ways family farmers are enriching our soil, protecting our water and growing our economy, in addition to bringing us good food for good health. In the HOMEGROWN Skills Tent, attendees had the opportunity to engage with food, farming and crafting. Some of the workshops included transforming hemp into paper, seed saving and composting.

Farm Aid announced today that its annual food and music festival will take place on Saturday, Sept. 17, at Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, Va., with tickets on sale to the public on Monday, June 27.

“Folks are educating themselves about where and how food is grown—they’re hungry for the truth,” said Farm Aid President and Founder Willie Nelson. “Family farmers bring us good food, protect our soil and water, and strengthen our country. Saturday's schedule on the Main Stage starts at 11:00 a.m. with Pick & Bow, Sam Gleaves, Lee Sexton, Chris King & Nigel Jones, The Local Honeys, The Price Sisters, Larry Sigmon & Martha Spencer, Carcassone Square Dance, Amythyst Klah, and Jericho Woods.  Over in the theatre, there will be a Grow Appalachia Workshop, Ethnobotany Workshop with Dr. Sunshine Brosi, Appalshop Archive Screening, Appalachian Media Institute Film Screenings, and the Roadside Theatre.  In the Conference Room, the Southern Appalachian Writers Cooperative will be having a broadcasted reading.  There will also be a group sing with Michael and Carrie Kline.

Thursday at 6:30 p.m., there will be Feedtime on the Cumberland at the Farmer's Market.

On Saturday, there will be a Shapenote Sing Workshop from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church.  For over two hundred years, communities of people across the country (and now around the world) have come together to sing these hauntingly beautiful hymns. The first hour, from 10 to 11, will be a singing school taught by Dr. Ron Pen of the University of Kentucky. We'll learn some history of shapenote, and learn how to sing it. Then for the next two hours, from 11 to 1, we'll have a regular sing, where anyone can call and lead a song, or just sing or listen. Anyone can take part in the singing -- no experience, note-reading ability, or "talent" needed!

Also on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be a Seedtime Hike. Join Pathfinders of Perry County for a Seedtime Hike on Pine Mountain. This hike is suitable for all ages, and kids are especially welcome (must be accompanied by adult). This year's hike will feature Trail Talks, a series of very short, interactive talks on watersheds, geology, bears, trees, and history! The hike itself is about 2 miles roundtrip, and of moderate difficulty (lots of elevation changes, but a mostly good trail). Bring water, wear sturdy shoes (tennis shoes are fine), and be prepared to learn lots of cool new stuff! Meet at the old Letcher County High School at 10:30 to carpool, or at Wylie's Last Resort at 11 a.m. to start hiking.

Renfro Valley keeping music tradition alive with 77th season in 2016

Nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, sits one of the longest lasting barn dances in America.  Renfro Valley Entertainment Center first opened in 1939 thanks to founder John Lair.  Many from around the region would come and enjoy the weekly barn dances, as well as Gospel services.  

Today, the entertainment complex host 4 weekly shows, as well as headliner concerts, gift shop village, and RV camping.  In the fall, they host the Appalachian Harvest Festival Antique Tractor, Gas Engine, and Truck show with the Southeastern Kentucky Antique Gas Engine and Tractor Association.

I recently sat down with Jerred Harris, Sales and Marketing Coordinator, of Renfro Valley about new changes this year, as well as keeping the musical tradition alive.  It is amazing that it is still one of the best family friendly places to see a concert.  It is a dry county, so no alcohol is served at shows.  Every show is fun for the entire family, and you can make a full weekend of entertainment.

This year in the Old Barn, there are 4 shows. There is a new Bluegrass and Classic Country Show, as well the Renfro Valley Bandstand.  It is a variety music show that includes audience participation in what they would like to hear.  Renfro Valley also continues to host their weekly Barn Dance, as well as Gospel Jubilee.  The original Renfro Valley Barn Dance started in 1939 and was carried by WHAS-AM out of Louisville and WCKY-AM in Cincinnati.  It is no longer on the radio, but fans can enjoy it live in person every Saturday night.

In the past, Renfro Valley hosted a Gathering Radio Show, which began in September of 1943 on the CBS Radio Network.  It was the third oldest continually broadcast radio program in America – only the Grand Ole Opry and Music & the Spoken Word had been broadcasted longer. While it is no longer broadcasted on radio, archives of broadcasts are available to listen online at www.renfrovalley.com.

One of the legends of Renfro Valley was recently inducted into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame in 2015.  Pete Stamper has been one of the longest performers at Renfro Valley.  Stamper is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to the history of Renfro Valley and Kentucky music.  If you ever do get the opportunity to meet him, you will always learn something new.

2016 presented a very unique situation with two country music legends scheduled to perform.  Don Williams was originally scheduled for two performances in April, but were moved into the fall.  Unfortunately, due to health issues, Williams decided to retire from performing.  He was always a long time staple performing at Renfro Valley.  In April, just a move before he was to perform, country music lost Merle Haggard with his passing.  Haggard was another long time performer at Renfro Valley over the years.  Even though no one could ever fill his shoes, traditional country music singer, Josh Turner, filled in the date in May.

Each year, Renfro Valley brings out a variety of headliner concert series.  One of the top returning acts is the Oak Ridge Boys - and is always a delight to see and hear Joe Bonsall talk stories along the way!  Kentucky artists are featured yearly, including this year with Steve Wariner, Exile, Loretta Lynn, Wynonna, Chris Knight, and more.

Ironically, there are several that have never played at Renfro Valley.  One of them being Dolly Parton.  Another that has performed out in the festival field was Willie Nelson.  Harris recalled, "I just recently found out that back a while ago that Willie Nelson actually was part owner of Renfro Valley.  There were a group of businessmen that had a lease to own option.  I guess when it ran out, Willie decided not to renew."  Now how wild would it have been if Willie Nelson continued to be owner?

This year, the shops in the village have grown to a wide variety of stores.  The stores include the Grist Mill, an outdoors store, the Country Music Store, a vareity store, Divine Boutique, Long Rider Leather, as well as Oak Factory Furniture store.  There will also be a Toys for Tots drop off area.  For a quick bite, visitors can enjoy a premium sandwich at Valley Station.  Just a tiny bit down the road is the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame and Museum, opened on Thursday, Friday, and Saturdays.  It is well worth seeing the exhibits portraying Kentucky's rich musical past.

Renfro Valley employees 16 workers during the week and about 30 on the weekends when there are shows.  Several workers have been there for over 20 years, continuing on the tradition of good quality family entertainment.

When asked why does he think Renfro Valley has lasted for 77 years, Harris replied, "I believe it is because of the family atmosphere.  There are many things to offer beyond music, and it appeals to both young and old."  As far what does the future hold for Renfro Valley, Jerred said that "everyone has a passion for it and plan on keeping the tradition alive.  We hope to have outdoor concerts, and possible continue doing the ghost tours in the fall."

I highly encourage you to help keep the tradition alive and well here in southeast Kentucky.  Go and patronize Renfro Valley Entertainment Center, whether it be a Headliner Concert, or even one of the old barn shows.  It is rare to be able to see a Barn Dance these days, so be sure to take your family to show them a tradition that has lasted multiple generations.

Top music stars to perform in Louisville at 145th NRA Annual Meeting

The National Rifle Association (NRA) Annual Meetings and Exhibits, sponsored by MidwayUSA, will be held May 19 to 22, 2016. Special events will be held at the Kentucky Exposition Center, KFC Yum! Center Arena, Kentucky International Convention Center and Belvedere at Waterfront Park. More than 70,000 attendees and 800-plus exhibitors are expected at this year’s Annual Meetings and Exhibits. Leading firearm manufacturers will display the industry’s latest products. NRA Country is pleased to present the NRA Country Jam presented by Colt at the Belvedere at Waterfront Park on Friday, May 20, featuring ACM Male Vocalist of the Year nominee Brett Eldredge, Jana Kramer, Breaking Southwest and Wildwood. I was there when...

Remember in the movie “O, Brother Where Art Thou?” when the guys saw the women at the river?  One of them exclaimed “I seen them first!”  These days, there are so many music acts that we each have had that moment of seeing them before their career took off.  Here are a few of my personal favorite memories over the years.

One of Kentucky's best concert venues is Renfro Valley Entertainment Center. It is located just an hour south of Lexington off exit 62 on I-75. Renfro Valley is known as "Kentucky's Country Music Capital" with its new barn headliner entertainment, along with their old barn theater, as well as the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame.

Tracy Lawrence kicks off Renfro Valley's 2016 Headliner Concerts with the first show of the season on April 16th. Tickets go on sale Tuesday, February 16th. There are many shows that return each year, including the Oak Ridge Boys, as well as Marty Stuart with his wife Connie Smith.

Renfro Valley also announced their new shows in the historic Old Barn Theatre. Thursdays at 6:30 p.m., Dukes of Hazzard fans will have to join in with the Hazzard County Hoedown. Friday nights at 6:30 p.m., it is the Renfro Valley Bandstand. Saturday is complete with a Mountain Gospel Jubilee at 3:00 p.m., followed by the longstanding Renfro Valley Barn Dance at 6:30 p.m.

Froggy Field Party to host Aaron Lewis and Brian Davis

It is no secret that the Froggy Field Parties are legendary here in Kentucky.  If you have never been, let me tell you that you need to go!  Country radio station, WFKY out of Frankfort, Kentucky, will be showcasing both local and national talent during their 7th Annual Froggy Field Party.  It will be held on August 15, 2015, at the Kentucky Renaissance Fairgrounds on 955 Elm Street in Eminence, Kentucky.  Doors open at 5:00 pm.

Headlining the Froggy Field Party is Aaron Lewis with special guest Brian Davis.  Aaron Lewis has well known for being a singer-songwriter in both the rock band, Staind, as well as setting out on his own as a solo act in country music.  

"Growing up with my grandparents, I was raised on traditional country music. It was the very first music that I listened to. From Waylon to Merle, grandpa would pull out his vinyl records and we would listen," Lewis recalls in an interview that I did with him in 2013.

North Carolina native Brian Davis is no stranger to the stage, whether it is a honky tonk or stadium.  He recently celebrating being a co-writer of Brantley Gilbert's number 1 song, "Hell of an Amen."  His high octane energy filled set is sure to get you grooving.  

When it comes to fans, Brian Davis said, What blows me away on a regular basis is that these guys could have done anything on a Friday night. They could have stayed at night, went to a ballgame, or go out to a vacant field and have a bonfire. But they chose to come here to see us perform. That means everything because ultimately without them we wouldn’t be able to do what we do. To know that we are connecting on that level is massive for me. It’s humbling for me,” Davis recalled. On the Local Stage, Jamie Tingle will be hosting R&R (Rayna & Ramsey), CJ Cumberland, and Ashley Renae Smith.

Tickets are $25 for general admission online, $30 at the door.  All ages are allowed.  Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs if they choose to sit.  Food and drink will be provided on site, so keep your coolers home.  You should slap on some sunscreen and some bug spray - it is a field party outside!  Most importantly - wear comfortable clothes.  There is no need to wear heels (yes I've seen chicks wear them) or a big fancy dress.
