J.D. Shelburne performing to benefit local Lawrenceburg charities

J.D. Shelburne has been very busy lately, having attended the Kentucky Derby and the Derby Eve festivities this past weekend.  On May 12th, Shelburne will be returning to Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, for a special concert benefitting God’s Pantry and The Light Center.  Opening for him will be Hannah Blaylock, formerly of Eden’s Edge.  The event is part of the “Nashville on the Green” in downtown Lawrenceburg near the intersection of Main Street and Woodford Street.  The show starts at 7:00 p.m.

There is no admission charge to the concert but fans are encouraged to donate canned goods, which will be divided between two local organizations, God’s Pantry and The Light Center. Donations will earn fans tickets for door prizes to be given throughout the night. Cash donations for the organizations will also be accepted.

J.D. Shelburne, a blue-blooded Kentucky boy who starred in basketball and baseball at Spencer County High School, embarked on his career in music after finding a guitar when cleaning out his late grandmother’s house. He taught himself to play while attending the University of Kentucky, and then moved to Nashville in 2008. He penned the song “Farmboy,” which became a regional hit in 2012. He has opened for over 50 national acts and received recent national attention for the videos of his songs “Hometown” and “Better Man” playing on GAC and CMT.

May 12th promises to be a night to remember in Lawrenceburg. Shelburne hosted a similar event in Taylorsville drawing an estimated 4,000 fans last year and even more are expected in Lawrenceburg.

Stoney Top Burgoo, of Lawrenceburg, plans to be set up to serve burgoo for lunch on concert day.  Pappy’s Porch of Hampshire, Tennessee, also plans to be set up by lunch time. Menu includes pulled pork BBQ sandwiches, 1/3-pound burgers, Nathan’s all-beef hot dogs, nachos, BBQ nachos, fries and the J.D. Dawg (Two hot dogs, chili, nacho cheese, diced onions, crushed nacho chips, and pulled pork BBQ).

The city parking lot on the west side of Western Avenue will be closed all day on Friday, May 12. Onsite parking will be available at First Baptist Church, Lawrenceburg City Hall, City Main Street Parking Lot, City College Street Parking Lot and behind the Anderson County Judge Executive Office. Released May 2015 on Mercury Records Nashville, "Traveller" initially debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Country Albums chart with more than 27,000 albums sold, making it one of the best-selling first weeks by a debut country artist in 2015.

Following a historic turn on the 49th Annual CMA Awards in 2016, where Stapleton became the first artist to win Album of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year and New Artist of the Year at the same awards – Traveller became the first album to re-enter the Billboard 200 all-genre album chart at No. 1, where is stayed for two straight weeks. The critically acclaimed album went on to win multiple Grammy and ACM Awards and was the #1 selling Country album of 2016 and the fourth-highest selling album of 2016 across all genres.

Meet Kenny Rogers in Kentucky and benefit CASA of the Bluegrass

Kenny Rogers - Photo by Piper Ferguson
Central Kentucky residents have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to personally meet country music icon and “The Gambler,” Kenny Rogers, when he makes his last stop in Danville at the Norton Center For The Arts on April 8 as part of his final world tour, The Gambler’s Last Deal Tour. In an online silent auction to benefit CASA of the Bluegrass, two exclusive VIP meet-and-greet tickets to meet Rogers backstage before his concert, along with two premium-seating concert tickets, will be up for the highest bidder’s grabs for ten days on eBay.com from January 15 to January 25, 2017.

Donations are tax-deductible, and all proceeds will benefit CASA of the Bluegrass, which serves to advance the best interests of abused and neglected children in the Anderson, Boyle, Franklin, and Mercer County Family Court Systems through the training and support of community volunteers who serve as Court Appointed Special Advocates working with children, the family, and the court. Currently, there is an increased demand for CASA volunteers and training.

“CASA volunteers are flies on the wall during some of the most horrific events in a child’s life, and some of the most wonderful,” said Laura Guerrant, executive director for CASA of the Bluegrass. “It can be emotional at times; it can be draining at times. But the end result of knowing that you helped ensure the child’s safety and permanency… that is exciting. That is the ultimate goal. There’s nothing better than seeing a family reunited or a child adopted,” Guerrant added.

The starting bid for the VIP package is $100, with hopes the charity can raise much more – all of which will go directly to funding the efforts of CASA of the Bluegrass. Interested donors can place their bids by visiting the homepage of casaofthebluegrass.org and clicking the “Kenny Rogers VIP Package Live Auction” button at the top, which will take them directly to the listing at eBay.com. Or they can access the direct eBay link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/-/132065329833. Final payment is processed through PayPal.

Throughout his unprecedented career, Kenny Rogers has sold more than 120 million albums worldwide and is the RIAA’s eighth best-selling male solo artist of all time. The first country artist to consistently sell out arenas, Rogers quickly became a pop superstar as well with smash hits like “Lucille,” “Lady,” “Islands In The Stream,” “You Decorated My Life,” “The Gambler,” and many more.

In 2015, Rogers was named CMT’s Artist Of A Lifetime, a career highlight preceded by his three GRAMMY Awards, 11 People’s Choice Awards, 19 American Music Awards, eight Academy Of Country Music (ACM) Awards and six Country Music Association (CMA) Awards. Last year, he announced his retirement on the Today Show and commenced The Gambler’s Last Deal Tour.

“I’m really looking forward to performing in Kentucky again,” Rogers told The Advocate-Messenger in a recent interview. “I love your part of the country and the people there.”

Josh Thompson reveals what drives his music career and love of hunting

Country music singer Josh Thompson is set to headline Friday night at the World Chicken Festival
Beyond the bright lights from the amusement rides, and the smell of fried chicken from the World's Largest Skillet, Friday night at the World Chicken Festival will bring in the likes of Josh Thompson and Ray Scott.  If there is one thing that is for certain, country music fans will be in for a treat.

Six years ago, Josh Thompson arrived on the scene with his single, "Beer on the Table."  It would be followed up with "Way Out Here," which has been loved by many that are fans of John Wayne, Johnny Cash, and John Deere, as the song would go.  Thompson has kept a busy touring schedule over the years, but manages to balance his music career and personal life.

"It's a different state of mind.  You travel a lot and get to see America.  I'm a homebody, but I also love being out on the road.  It has been two different ways of life for me," Thompson recalls on balancing two aspects of his life.

Josh Thompson is no stranger to Kentucky when it comes to performances.  Six years ago, he headlined the WFKY Froggy Field Party.  (Check out review here.)  "Now that was a great time," Josh recalled.  "The fans and the folks at the radio station welcomed me with open arms.  I still remembered it."

Just when his career was taking off years ago, he went through several record label changes due to restructuring within each company.  He credits the fans for keeping him motivated.  According to Josh, "the fans are what motivate me.  When you release new music, and they love it, it keeps me going.  They (the fans) are what drive me to continue pushing forward."

Whenever an artist is faced with label changes, sometimes they lose the rights of the recordings they performed under the label.  Thankfully for Josh Thompson, he was able to use the original recordings for "Change: The Lost Record."  Josh indicated that he was able to use the originals to remix and remaster each song.  In essence, he released volume 1 in 2015 and Volume 2 is scheduled to be released in the next couple of months.

Josh Thompson is an avid outdoorsman, being a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and a partner with NRA Country.  He recently completed his third elk hunt; however he said that he "would love to be able to hunt elk in Kentucky.  Everyone is keeping an eye on the popularity that it has become there.  I recently went deer hunting a couple of weeks ago and was able to get a fully dressed deer."  He was excited to hear about the new Appalachian Wildlife Center that is being built in Bell County, Kentucky.

When Josh Thompson takes to the stage at the World Chicken Festival, he knows that music fans will have a good time with pure country music.  Be sure to catch his free concert on Friday, September 30th at the World Chicken Festival in downtown London, Kentucky.  Opening will be Whiskey Belles at 6:00 and Ray Scott at 7:30 before Josh Thompson performs at 9:00 p.m.  It is free and open to the public.  More information on Josh Thompson can be found at www.joshthompsonofficial.com and on the World Chicken Festival at http://chickenfestival.com.

Josh Goodlett talks about balance family alongside music career

Josh Goodlett
Growing up in Taylorsville, Kentucky, Josh Goodlett was always drawn to music.  When he was 26 years old, he performed his first show in front of an audience at Aunt Bees.  It was that day at the ice cream and pizza shop in Georgetown, Indiana, that he would decide that he wanted to try a career in music.  These days, Josh has been burning up the road opening shows for the likes of Craig Campbell, Tyler Farr, and even Big Smo.  This Saturday, he will be part of the WFKY Froggy Field Party in Eminence, Kentucky.

While out on a radio tour, the first station that he heard his songs playing was one out of Louisville.  According to Josh Goodlett, "even though that was the first one, I will have to say that WFKY Froggy out of Frankfort has consistently played my singles.  I am very thankful for the support that they have given me."

Being a newcomer, Josh Goodlett has opened up for several popular acts in music.  When asked who has given him the best advice, one would be suprise that it was Big Smo, country-rapper making a name for himself.  "Big Smo was very influential," Josh recalls.  "He told me not to quit, play whenever, wherever, and get the music out there, even if it is free."  Another artist that has provided advice was traditional country artist, Ray Scott.  "I met Ray Scott at Unbridled Eve Derby Eve event.  We hung out and I know that I can text him with any questions.  He is one of those people that enjoys helping others.  He and Big Smo are guys giving back to others because they have been in that same spot," Josh said.

What can fans expect when they see Josh Goodlett perform live?  Josh explained that "I give everything I have and leave it on stage.  I try to mirror other people, like Waylon Jennings, Kenny Chesney, Luke Bryan, those guys.  I want to make sure that the audience feels it.  I'm excited that my 82 year old grandma is coming to the Froggy Field Party.  She doesn't get to see many shows, so this one will be very special."

Off stage, Josh Goodlett is a very busy family man.  Not only does he work full time with his music career, but he holds a full time job, along with coaching Little League, and balance family responsibilities.  How does he balance this hectic schedule?  Josh said, "It is hard to balance it all, but when I'm with my family, I put them first and don't take calls while at home."  To him, family comes first and that is how anyone should be.

Currently, Josh Goodlett's latest single, "I Don't Usually Do This," has been released to radio, as well as a music video.  Fans can expect a new album in the next year.  In the meantime, fans can keep up with Josh Goodlett and his touring schedule by visiting www.joshgoodlett.com, or Facebook at www.facebook.com/joshgoodlettband.

Appalshop to celebrate 30th anniversary of Seedtime on the Cumberland

On June 3-4th, Seedtime on the Cumberland continues its annual tradition of bringing musical entertainment in the mountains of southeastern Kentucky.  Hosted by Appalshop, the event is free and open to the public at the Appalashop headquarters in Whitesburg, Kentucky.

Scheduled to perform include Lee Sexton, Jericho Woods, Amythyst Kiah, Chris King, Larry Sigmon and Martha Spencer, The Local Honeys, Michael & Carrie Kline, Nikos Pappas, Sam Gleaves, Saro Lynch Thomason, The Price Sisters, Kevin Howard, Brett Ratliff, Bill & The Belles, and Sunrise Ridge.

Seedtime on the Cumberland furthers Appalshop’s mission through the presentation and broadcasting of Appalshop’s work to the general public intensively over one weekend each year. Seedtime’s goal is to "be a mirror for the mountain people and communities. To remind folks here of our cultural riches and traditions of the true vine that make this region vibrant and always growing. Seedtime on the Cumberland brings the arts of the community to the community, and, by broadcasting this festival live on the airwaves of WMMT and on the internet at www.wmmt.org, we present ourselves to the entire world."

Friday's schedule starts at 5:00 p.m. on the Main Stage with Rich Kirby & Nate Polly, Kevin Howard, Nikos Pappas, Sunrise Ridge, Bill & The Belles, and Brett Ratliff closing it out at 10:00 p.m.  In the Cowan Community Theatre, there will be a screening of "After Coal" by Tom Hansell.

Saturday's schedule on the Main Stage starts at 11:00 a.m. with Pick & Bow, Sam Gleaves, Lee Sexton, Chris King & Nigel Jones, The Local Honeys, The Price Sisters, Larry Sigmon & Martha Spencer, Carcassone Square Dance, Amythyst Klah, and Jericho Woods.  Over in the theatre, there will be a Grow Appalachia Workshop, Ethnobotany Workshop with Dr. Sunshine Brosi, Appalshop Archive Screening, Appalachian Media Institute Film Screenings, and the Roadside Theatre.  In the Conference Room, the Southern Appalachian Writers Cooperative will be having a broadcasted reading.  There will also be a group sing with Michael and Carrie Kline.

Thursday at 6:30 p.m., there will be Feedtime on the Cumberland at the Farmer's Market.

On Saturday, there will be a Shapenote Sing Workshop from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church.  For over two hundred years, communities of people across the country (and now around the world) have come together to sing these hauntingly beautiful hymns. The first hour, from 10 to 11, will be a singing school taught by Dr. Ron Pen of the University of Kentucky. We'll learn some history of shapenote, and learn how to sing it. Then for the next two hours, from 11 to 1, we'll have a regular sing, where anyone can call and lead a song, or just sing or listen. Anyone can take part in the singing -- no experience, note-reading ability, or "talent" needed!

Also on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be a Seedtime Hike. Join Pathfinders of Perry County for a Seedtime Hike on Pine Mountain. This hike is suitable for all ages, and kids are especially welcome (must be accompanied by adult). This year's hike will feature Trail Talks, a series of very short, interactive talks on watersheds, geology, bears, trees, and history! The hike itself is about 2 miles roundtrip, and of moderate difficulty (lots of elevation changes, but a mostly good trail). Bring water, wear sturdy shoes (tennis shoes are fine), and be prepared to learn lots of cool new stuff! Meet at the old Letcher County High School at 10:30 to carpool, or at Wylie's Last Resort at 11 a.m. to start hiking.

Be sure to check out the Seedtime on the Cumberland website with schedule and performer information at www.seedtimefestival.org or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/seedtimefestival.

Renfro Valley keeping music tradition alive with 77th season in 2016

Renfro Valley Barn Dance back in time
Nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, sits one of the longest lasting barn dances in America.  Renfro Valley Entertainment Center first opened in 1939 thanks to founder John Lair.  Many from around the region would come and enjoy the weekly barn dances, as well as Gospel services.

Today, the entertainment complex host 4 weekly shows, as well as headliner concerts, gift shop village, and RV camping.  In the fall, they host the Appalachian Harvest Festival Antique Tractor, Gas Engine, and Truck show with the Southeastern Kentucky Antique Gas Engine and Tractor Association.

I recently sat down with Jerred Harris, Sales and Marketing Coordinator, of Renfro Valley about new changes this year, as well as keeping the musical tradition alive.  It is amazing that it is still one of the best family friendly places to see a concert.  It is a dry county, so no alcohol is served at shows.  Every show is fun for the entire family, and you can make a full weekend of entertainment.

This year in the Old Barn, there are 4 shows. There is a new Bluegrass and Classic Country Show, as well the Renfro Valley Bandstand.  It is a variety music show that includes audience participation in what they would like to hear.  Renfro Valley also continues to host their weekly Barn Dance, as well as Gospel Jubilee.  The original Renfro Valley Barn Dance started in 1939 and was carried by WHAS-AM out of Louisville and WCKY-AM in Cincinnati.  It is no longer on the radio, but fans can enjoy it live in person every Saturday night.

From Renfro Valley Entertainment Center

One of the original Renfro Valley Barn Dance cast photos
In the past, Renfro Valley hosted a Gathering Radio Show, which began in September of 1943 on the CBS Radio Network.  It was the third oldest continually broadcast radio program in America – only the Grand Ole Opry and Music & the Spoken Word had been broadcasted longer. While it is no longer broadcasted on radio, archives of broadcasts are available to listen online at www.renfrovalley.com.

One of the legends of Renfro Valley was recently inducted into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame in 2015.  Pete Stamper has been one of the longest performers at Renfro Valley.  Stamper is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to the history of Renfro Valley and Kentucky music.  If you ever do get the opportunity to meet him, you will always learn something new.
From Kentucky Music Hall of Fame
2016 presented a very unique situation with two country music legends scheduled to perform.  Don Williams was originally scheduled for two performances in April, but were moved into the fall.  Unfortunately, due to health issues, Williams decided to retire from performing.  He was always a long time staple performing at Renfro Valley.  In April, just a move before he was to perform, country music lost Merle Haggard with his passing.  Haggard was another long time performer at Renfro Valley over the years.  Even though no one could ever fill his shoes, traditional country music singer, Josh Turner, filled in the date in May.

Each year, Renfro Valley brings out a variety of headliner concert series.  One of the top returning acts is the Oak Ridge Boys - and is always a delight to see and hear Joe Bonsall talk stories along the way!  Kentucky artists are featured yearly, including this year with Steve Wariner, Exile, Loretta Lynn, Wynonna, Chris Knight, and more.

Ironically, there are several that have never played at Renfro Valley.  One of them being Dolly Parton.  Another that has performed out in the festival field was Willie Nelson.  Harris recalled, "I just recently found out that back a while ago that Willie Nelson actually was part owner of Renfro Valley.  There were a group of businessmen that had a lease to own option.  I guess when it ran out, Willie decided not to renew."  Now how wild would it have been if Willie Nelson continued to be owner?

This year, the shops in the village have grown to a wide variety of stores.  The stores include the Grist Mill, an outdoors store, the Country Music Store, a vareity store, Divine Boutique, Long Rider Leather, as well as Oak Factory Furniture store.  There will also be a Toys for Tots drop off area.  For a quick bite, visitors can enjoy a premium sandwich at Valley Station.  Just a tiny bit down the road is the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame and Museum, opened on Thursday, Friday, and Saturdays.  It is well worth seeing the exhibits portraying Kentucky's rich musical past.

Renfro Valley employees 16 workers during the week and about 30 on the weekends when there are shows.  Several workers have been there for over 20 years, continuing on the tradition of good quality family entertainment.

When asked why does he think Renfro Valley has lasted for 77 years, Harris replied, "I believe it is because of the family atmosphere.  There are many things to offer beyond music, and it appeals to both young and old."  As far what does the future hold for Renfro Valley, Jerred said that "everyone has a passion for it and plan on keeping the tradition alive.  We hope to have outdoor concerts, and possible continue doing the ghost tours in the fall."

I highly encourage you to help keep the tradition alive and well here in southeast Kentucky.  Go and patronize Renfro Valley Entertainment Center, whether it be a Headliner Concert, or even one of the old barn shows.  It is rare to be able to see a Barn Dance these days, so be sure to take your family to show them a tradition that has lasted multiple generations.

For more information, be sure to check out www.renfrovalley.com.  Also, be sure to check out the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame and Museum just a few steps away to learn more about Kentucky's rich music heritage.

A fitting homecoming for Sturgill Simpson at Lexington Opera House

Last night was almost a homecoming for Sturgill Simpson, who was born in Breathitt County, but raised in nearby Versailles, Kentucky.  It had been over 3 years since Sturgill had played in Lexington.  Back then, it was to rooms with a few hundred.  However, after three albums released and worldwide recognition, Sturgill Simpson came back to two sold out shows at the Lexington Opera House.

With no opener or no cheesy introduction, Sturgill Simpson walked out onto stage alongside his band with the crowd cheering loudly for the state ambassador of what Kentucky country music is about.  They kicked things off with “Sitting Here Without You,” followed up with “Time After All.”  He would surprise with his wonderful rendition channeling Keith Whitley on the Lefty Frizzell and Whitey Shaver co-written song “I Never Go Around Mirrors.”

Sturgill Simpson showcased his vocal potential filling the room with strong emotional lyrics that empowered and mesmerized those listening.  One thing is for sure, Sturgill Simpson does not need lights, smoke, big screens, and other gimmicks that other so called country music acts must use to get the audience’s attention.

For the first half of the show, Sturgill Simpson showcased selections from “High Top Mountain” and “Metamodern Sounds of Country Music.”  The final hour was reserved for playing the entire “Sailor’s Guide to Earth” album just recently released.  Every song was played as if it was the last time they would be playing those hits.

During “Voices,” Sturgill was surprised himself as the crowd sang along, and continued to sing as he took pause.  The song flowed fluidly just like a stream rolling through the mountains of Appalachia that many call home here in Kentucky.

There were little snippets of humor from Sturgill throughout the show.  At the beginning, he joked, “I know that this is the Opera House, but you don’t have to be so formal,” to the attentive crowd.  He encouraged folks to get up and dance, but to be respectful to those that are unable to see or choose to sit.  After the crowd responded loudly at the saxophone solo during “The Promise,” it shook Sturgill up and he lost his place.  He responded by mentioning “have you seen the movie Blue Valentine?”

For this tour, Sturgill added a 3-piece horn section, Scott Frock (trumpet), Brad Walker (saxophone), and John Ramm (trombone), that hailed from New Orleans.  His bass player, Chuck Bartels and keyboard player, Bobby Emmett, were from Detroit.  Fellow Versailles native, Miles Miller, proudly showed off his Kentuckian shirt while singing backup and playing percussion. He would even have garnered a standing ovation from the audience when he was introduced.  Laurs Joamet of Estonia, but now “a card carrying American” as Sturgill would note, would ease into playing guitar and steel guitar.

Every journalist and fan has tried to explain what type of music Sturgill Simpson plays and everyone has their own opinions.  Personally, I feel that it is back to the early roots of country music that blended in the wailing blues, Appalachian lonesome sound, soul, bluegrass, and so much more.  If you blended the musical selections of Merle Haggard, James Brown, Ray Charles, Bob Segar, Ralph Stanley, Conway Twitty, Roy Orbison, and Keith Whitley, you would get the product of Sturgill Simpson.

In the end, Sturgill Simpson blew the roof off with his powerful “Call to Arms” that really made everyone stand up and pay attention to what is being sung.  With the end, he bid farewell to the fans who supported a great night of musical entertainment with an enthusiastic standing ovation that lasted over five minutes.
